Athens to Venice Ancient Olympia, the Palace of Diocletian and the natural beauty of the Dalmatian Coast aboard Aegean Odyssey |
13 Days / 12 Nights •May 14, 2012 |
 |
The clear blue waters of the Adriatic Sea and some of the most breathtakingly beautiful islands and coastal scenery in the world define the Dalmatian Coast. This cruise has been designed to take advantage of the glorious late Spring sunshine that usually favours this region and to take you to the most spectacular landscapes it has to offer. From the numerous sparsely populated islands of the Zadar Archipelago and the Kornati National Park to the dramatic beauty of Kotor Bay, Dalmatia is surely one of the loveliest parts of Europe.
Includes 2 nights pre-cruise stay in Athens
Day 1 - ATHENS, GREECE
Transfer to your hotel.
Day 2 - ATHENS
What better way to start your stay in the Greek capital than a full morning’s expertly guided tour of the ancient citadel of Athens, the Acropolis. Built during the “Golden Age” of Athens between 447-438BC under the orders of the great statesman Pericles,
the Acropolis represents the magnificent cultural and political achievements of Athenian culture during this remarkable era. You will also visit the wonderful recently opened Acropolis Museum. In the afternoon and evening you are free to continue exploring Athens.
Day 3 - ATHENS/PIRAEUS
This morning you may choose to visit the marvellous National Archaeological Museum, the ancient Agora and the magnificent Hephaisteion or simply wander through the streets of the bustling Plaka district.
In the afternoon, you transfer to the port of Piraeus and board Aegean Odyssey.
Day 4 - NAUPLIA/MYCENAE/EPIDAURUS
Anchor off the port of Nauplia in time for breakfast. The morning will be dedicated to exploring the great Mycenaean culture that flourished in this area, known as the Argolid plain, between 1600-1300BC. At its heart is the ancient city of Mycenae, reputedly the capital of Agamemnon and the “well-built citadel” of Homer’s Iliad. In the afternoon there is the option to visit Epidaurus, sacred to Aesclepios, the god of medicine, and the site of the best preserved of all ancient Greek theatres. Or you may choose to visit the elegant town of Nauplia
where you will find an excellent Archaeological Museum, housed in the impressive former Venetian Arsenal. Midnight departure for Monemvasía.
Day 5 - MONEMVASÍA
A massive rock rising from the sea and joined to the mainland by a causeway built in the 6th century, it is easy to see how Monemvasía got its nickname “the Gibraltar of Greece.” After breakfast, the morning will be spent on a walking tour of the beautiful lower town, which includes the 13th-century Christos Elkomenos cathedral with its Venetian belfry. For those who feel energetic there is a path leading to the upper town to see the Byzantine Agía Sofia church.
Lunchtime departure for Katakolon and a relaxing afternoon at sea.
Day 6 - KATAKOLON/OLYMPIA/IONIAN ISLANDS/ITHACA
Arrive in the early morning at the port of Katakolon for a morning's tour of Ancient Olympia. The first Olympic Games took place here in 776BC when the top athletes of Greece's city-states met to compete in sprinting, wrestling and boxing. The site was also an important religious centre as Mount Olympos, after which the site was named, was believed to be the home of Zeus. Return to the ship for a lunchtime departure and an afternoon cruising the Ionian islands en route to Ithaca.
An evening arrival offers the perfect opportunity to explore the attractive port of Vathy. Late departure for Corfu.
Day 7 - CORFU/SARANDE/BUTRINT, ALBANIA
With cricket still played on the green, the legacy of British rule is evident in Corfu Town as you will see during this morning’s tour. You will also visit the Byzantine Museum housed in the church of Panagía Antivouniótissa and the elegant Esplanade. At lunchtime, the ship makes the short sail to Sarande for the trip to Butrint. The Albanian archaeological site of Butrint has been occupied since at least the 8th century BC. The Roman Emperor Augustus founded a colony here, and Butrint remained a Roman port until the 6th century. Its later medieval history was turbulent as the town was involved in the power struggles between Byzantium and successive Norman, Angevin and Venetian states.
It is consequently a fascinating archaeological and historical site. Evening departure for Dubrovnik.
Day 8 - KOTOR BAY/DUBROVNIK, CROATIA
In the early afternoon, the ship cruises the stunning fjord of Kotor Bay in Montenegro. With arrival in Dubrovnik in the early evening you will be able to have a drink or dine out in this most charming of ports.
Day 9 - DUBROVNIK
This morning’s sightseeing features the magnificent fortifications including the 10th-century city walls, the Baroque Church of St Blaise and the Cathedral which boasts Titian’s Assumption over the main altar.
In the afternoon, you are free to continue exploring the many sites of Dubrovnik. Overnight sail to Split.
Day 10 - SPLIT/TROGIR
The morning will be spent touring the Palace of Diocletian including the Temple of Jupiter and Diocletian’s mausoleum. In the afternoon there is the option of visiting one of the true gems of the Dalmatian coast, the delightful island of Trogir.
Chance of an evening ashore before the ship’s late departure for Zadar.
Day 11 - ZADAR/CRUISING THE KORNATI ISLANDS
The Romans, Byzantines and Venetians all coveted the port of Zadar and as a result it is rich in fascinating monuments. The morning walking tour of the town will include the Roman forum, the Romanesque jewel that is the Cathedral of St Anastasia and the Byzantine masterpiece the Church of St Donat.
The ship departs at lunchtime and winds its way through the breathtaking beauty of the Kornati Islands and past Losinj on its way to Venice.
Day 12 - VENICE, ITALY
Whether you are seeing the great sites of Venice such as the Piazza San Marco, the Bridge of Sighs and the Doge’s Palace for the first time or revisiting these remarkable buildings, there is no better way to start your visit than with a morning’s walking tour of this magnificent city. In the afternoon, you are free to arrange a trip to the stunning island of Torcello, walk to the Rialto or the Accademia or simply indulge in a Bellini in Harry’s Bar.
In the evening, there is an exclusive visit to St Mark's for a private tour: not to be missed!
Day 13 - VENICE
Transfer to Airport for the flight home.
