Tales of Homer’s hero Odysseus loom large in waters lapping around Ithaca before Istanbul – full of Eastern promise
2012 Itinerary
DUBROVNIK (Croatia)
In the words of George Bernard Shaw, ‘If you want to see heaven on earth, come to Dubrovnik’.
Imposing 13th century walls enveloping a warren of narrow, winding streets, beautiful gothic, renaissance and baroque churches,
monasteries, palaces and fountains – Dubrovnik’s Old Town is timeless! Take the
cable car to the top of Mount Srdj. Crowned with a single white cross, it’s a symbol this city’s known siege.
PULA (Croatia)
The Triumphal Arch of the Sergi, Gate of Hercules, Temple of Augustus and marvellous amphitheatre, once the site of
bloody gladiatorial battles, speak volumesabout the Roman Empire in Colonia Pietas Iulia Pola – the name by which Pula was
once known. Walk through the town peeling back many layers of a fascinating 3,000-year history, or visit the 14 islands and islets
making up the beautiful Brijuni Islands National Park.
VENICE (Italy)
Glittering, spellbinding, beautiful, beguiling, Venice – built on a canvas of 117 islets and
islands, woven together by 409 bridges and laced by a labyrinth of elegant canals,
is one of the world’s most attractive cities. Admire muted tones of centuries-old
palazza mirrored in the water, walk across the legendary Bridge of Sighs and visit the
imposing Doge’s Palace – omnipotent rulers that created a city of once unimaginable wealth.
KOPER (Slovenia)
The fascinating capital Ljubljana, medieval Piran, the mysterious underground world of
Postojna Cave and stunning beauty of Lake Bled are all possibilities from Koper, itself a
city imbued in Slovenian history. Beyond the working wharves a charming old town still
reflects the days when the Venetians came and stayed.
HVAR (Croatia)
Late medieval, renaissance and baroque houses crowd the deep bay of this Croatian
stronghold. Step ashore on the Fabrika, Hvar’s honeycomb-patterned stone quay, and explore the charming town where chapels
and palaces are embellished with intricately carved Venetian architecture. Venture further
and discover the island, a harmonious symbiosis of old villages and towns with
ancient olive trees, vineyards and vast fields of lavender.
KOTOR (Montenegro)
Dramatic sheer mountains plunging into the Adriatic, a backdrop to villages studded
like pearls along shores lapped by incredibly blue waters, the approach to Kotor, nestled
in one of the world’s most beautiful bays, is breathtaking. Kotor itself is a gorgeous
medieval walled city with world heritage status. Stroll through a maze of tiny alleys
that meet unexpectedly to form squares anything but square. Every time worn stone,
fresco painting and hidden alley holds clues to a glorious past.
DURRES (Albania)
With a history stretching back to 627 BC and control of the city changing 33 times in
the last 900 years, Durres can boast of a rich historical heritage. Inland the walls of Kruja
Castle hold echoes of Skanderbeg, Albania’s national hero. Once a dour city of soulless
Soviet-style buildings, Tirana’s shaking off its shackled past, emerging in a rainbow of
colours looking towards a horizon of hope
ITEA (Greece)
Where heaven and earth met, Delphi – site of the Delphic Oracle, was for ancient Greeks
the centre of the known world. Magnificently sited among cypresses and palms on the
sacred slopes of Mount Parnassos, the atmospheric ruins – undoubtedly a highlight
from Itea, trumpet the glories of the past.
KATAKOLON (Greece)
Every four years for more than a millennium ancient Greeks flocked to Olympia to
celebrate the sacred games dedicated to Zeus. Katakolon is your gateway to one of the most
important sanctuaries of ancient Greece. Mercouri Vineyard and Winery is a relaxing alternative.
PIRAEUS (Greece)
Birthplace of civilisation, democracy and many wise scholars of ancient times, Athens
– where one of the most glorious histories in the world lives on in some of the world’s
most formidable edifices. Piraeus is gateway to the Greek capital, a showcase of ancient
Greece. Alternatively Corinth with its ancient Temple of Apollo in contrast with the
amazing Corinth Canal.
CANNAKALE (Turkey)
Some 3,000 years of history exist in the pages between two important chapters that can be
explored from Canakkale on the Asian side of the Dardanelles. Visit the legendary city of
Troy, the city that fell to the ruse of the Trojan horse. Across the strait lie poignant reminders
of the tragic Gallipoli campaign, one of the bloodiest battles in the First World War.
ISTANBUL (Turkey)
Straddling the Bosphorus that links the Black Sea with the Mediterranean and separates
Europe from Asia, Istanbul is a fascinating crucible of cultures. Hagia Sophia, St Saviour
in Chora, Topkapi Palace and the Blue Mosque are just some of this glorious city’s
highlights. With an overnight stay you’ve time to explore,
seek out treasures in the colourful, vaulted Grand Bazaar and enjoy a night of traditional
Turkish entertainment ashore.
