Mediterranean Islands Discovery
Spain, Italy, Montenegro and Croatia
aboard M.S. Andrea |
| 12 Days/11 Nights - August 23-Sept. 3, 2008 |

This in-depth cultural cruise is scheduled during a great time of the year to explore Spain, Italy and Croatia, and the diverse islands of the Mediterranean.
On the eastern shores of Sicily lies the town of Syracuse, which rivaled Athens itself as the largest and most beautiful city in the Greek World. An optional tour begins with a visit to the archaeological district and its well-preserved Greek theatre, with seats carved from the limestone.
On the “sole” of mainland Italy’s “boot” lies the port of Gallipoli, our jumping off point for the walled town of Lecce, called “La Firenze del Sud” because of its prominent Baroque monuments that are equals to those in Florence. Along the town’s attractive winding streets, see the Church of the Holy Cross, the 13th-century Duomo and the Celestines’ Convent.
Across the Adriatic, towering mountains and the irregularly shaped shoreline create spectacular views as the Andrea cruises into Montenegro’s Gulf of Kotor. Historic sites and fortifications within the medieval walled city of Kotor have been remarkably restored from a devastating earthquake 25 years ago.
Just to the north, Dubrovnik is a breathtaking sight, entirely surrounded by massive gray walls of stone, interspersed with four gates, three forts, five bastions and 14 square towers. The “Pearl of the Adriatic” contains a treasure-trove of medieval art and architecture that has earned it a designation as a UN World Heritage Site.
A stroll along the Stradun—the Old Town’s pedestrian promenade—allows you to discover Dubrovnik’s many fine shops, cafés and boutiques at leisure.
In Split, the palace of the Emperor Diocletian shows a remarkable resiliency of use through the centuries. Within walking distance from the ship, the palace can be explored on foot: the imperial apartment as well as the octagonal mausoleum, converted in the Middle Ages to the Cathedra of St. Domnius. There are also opportunities to visit the handsome gallery and studio of
Ivan Mestrovic—Croatia’s most famous sculptor—on the nearby Marjan Peninsula.
Magnificent Venice occupies 117 islands in the azure northern waters of the Adriatic. This lagoon city is a watery maze of grand canals, 177 smaller canals, over 450 bridges and the world’s most famous sandbar, the Lido.
The city’s enticing beauty—typified by the Byzantine architecture, enormous stained glass windows rising along the Grand Canal—attest to the Venice’s historic role as a great Eastern trader. A walk through St. Mark’s Square provides a wealth of sights from the Doge’s Palace and the Bridge of Sighs to the Campanile and St. Mark’s Cathedral.
