Lisbon, Portugal to Civitavecchia, Italy aboard M.S. Andrea
14 Days / 13 Nights • August 24 - September 6, 2007 or

August 24-31 — 8 Days/7 Nights, Lisbon to Toulon
August 31-Sept. 6 —
7 Days/6 Nights, Toulon to Civitavecchia
This in-depth cultural cruise is scheduled during a great time of the year to explore Portugal, Spain’s sunny coast and the diverse islands of the Mediterranean. Begin in Lisbon, the capital city that launched many Portuguese expeditions during the 15th and 16th centuries. It’s oldest neighborhood, Alfama, is a hillside labyrinth of narrow lanes and stairways, shops, houses and cafes. In the evening, the sounds of distinctive Fado music drift over the city, welcoming visitors and residents alike.

Wrought iron balconies, tiled walls and ornate stonework are hallmarks of Portimão’s old quarter, but this fisherman’s town on Portugal’s southern coast is a gateway to magnificent Praia da Rocha Beach and other attractions of the Algarve. Nearby is the Ria de Alvor, a vast saltwater estuary stretching inland where many species of migratory birds can be found. From our dock in Cadiz, enjoy an optional excursion to the Andalusian cultural center of Seville. The centerpiece of this river city is the 15th-century Cathedral, partially built from a mosque that predated it on this site. The gardens in the nearby Alcázar are a pleasure to stroll through, as is the Santa Cruz quarter, with its narrow lanes, flowered balconies, richly decorated façades and hidden patios.

And at the next stop in Motril, passengers can journey to Granada, famous for the Alhambra. This stunning 13th-century Moorish citadel and palace complex sits atop a reddish hill in the Andalusian countryside. Nearby are the Gardens of Generalife and the Fortress of Alcazba. The smallest of the inhabited Balearic Islands, Formentera is accessible only by boat. The 35-square-mile island has craggy cliffs, numerous beaches and secluded bays, with incredible views from nearly any spot.

Barcelona and the Catalan region are truly distinct from the rest of Spain, and the people are proud of their independent spirit and culture. While its Barri Gòtic is one of the most intact Gothic quarters in the world, Barcelona was also at the forefront of 20th-century art and architecture trends. Explore its beaches and parklands, its monuments and world-famous Gaudí-designed cathedral. Maritime history and commerce define the sunny Mediterranean port city of Toulon, France. Napoleon first made a name for himself here in 1793, and the Resistance scuttled the French fleet in 1942 rather than see it fall into German hands. It is a lively, colorful city much loved by the Provençal locals.

Granite hills rise high above the pastel-colored houses that line the harbor of Bastia, Corsica. Explore the narrow lanes of Terra Vecchia, the town’s oldest neighborhood, with its shops and cafes, or the Place St.-Nicolas, Bastia’s central hub. The harbor of Portoferraio on Elba Island is as enthralling today as it was to the mariners of antiquity. It as the refuge of Napoleon for ten months in 1814-1815, when he set up his headquarters in the Villa dei Mulini and the hilltop summer residence of San Martino, now an interesting museum.

Approaching Bonifacio, Corsica aboard the Andrea offers a magnificent view of dramatic limestone cliffs on top of which lies la Haute Ville, built on the site of a ninth-century citadel. The lively town below at the end of a fjord-like natural harbor, and is home to local fishing boats as well as yachts and ferries. La Maddalena, a small island just off the northern coast of Sardinia, has had the misfortune through the centuries of bearing the brunt of military action by a host of conquering navies: Romans, Pisans, Genoans, British and French. Today, it attracts scuba divers and sun lovers with its clear waters, shipwrecks and beaches. Local craftsmen offer hand-woven carpets, coral jewelry, pottery and woodcarvings.

Cagliari, Sardinia is an active fishing port built on seven hills, with its heart in the old Castello district overlooking the harbor. A marvelous confusion of twisting lanes leads away from the port, and one can find Pisan fortifications and the Bastione San Remy on the Piazza Constituzione, with its great views. Situated on Sicily’s northern coast, Cefalù is a captivating seaside town. Several medieval buildings are intact, and the maze of charming streets make for an interesting walk. An 11th-century Norman fortification and ruins of a Greek temple keep watch from the adjacent mountain slope, and the views are inspiring.

Before ending your cruise in Civitavecchia, gateway to Rome, a full day is set aside for the rustic island retreat of Ponza. Its jagged coastline is a mosaic of multicolored volcanic rock cliffs, and legend has it that Pontius Pilate farmed moray eels, a delicacy favored by the ancient Romans, in nearby caves. The landscape is dotted with attractive bays and beaches where one can find a variety of interesting shops and cafes.
