With their ornate timberwork, oriels and narrow streets, many of the towns and villages on the Rhine, Main and Moselle seem like they belong to another era. Everything that has stood the test of time is lovingly cared for and proudly displayed. Strasbourg in France is where the European Parliament makes important decisions about the future. Yet it is also a city that is proud of its picturesque medieval city centre. Heidelberg simply wouldn’t be the same without its famous castle, and the lively pace of life in Bamberg would not have the same charm if it were not taking place in the largest historic town centre in Germany. Majestic castles sit enthroned on the hilltops above the Main, church towers peep out above the roofs, and almost every hillside has been covered in vines for centuries. For the Romans not only built whole towns, but were also responsible for introducing us to wine. A Roman poet from Trier wrote a long poem about the Moselle, which at the time was called the Mosella. By the end of the 18th century, the whole world knew that the hilly banks of the Rhine were perhaps the most beautiful spot of the Romantic period. Riverside romance and traditional wine-making.
