This late summer adventure offers insight into some of the Mediterranean’s great ancient civilizations: Greek, Roman and Byzantine. On this voyage, explore some of the most important ancient sites and spectacular landscapes in this endlessly fascinating corner of Europe.
On the island of Capri, explore the craggy coastline and numerous grottoes, with the Blue Grotto most
famous. The island retains a notable air of independence from the nearby Italian mainland. Palermo, the capital city of Sicily, sits on a wide bay beneath Monte Pellagrino. The town’s heyday in the 11th and 12th centuries is still reflected in the distinctive combination of Moorish and European architecture. Visit the Palazzo dei Normanni and the Quattro Canti, with its Baroque influence.
With Sicily’s Mount Etna towering overhead, visit the beautifully situated medieval town of Taormina, known for its ancient Greek theatre, still in use. Heading east, the next port of call is Argostolion on the beautiful island of Kefalonia where visitors are fascinated by the infinite variety of natural surroundings: deep blue sea, mountains and small green plains of grape and olive groves. The island was the recent setting for the movie, “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin.”
Crowned by a fortress, a massive rock called Monemvasia rises
dramatically out of the sea. The real attraction is the medieval town with its
narrow cobbled streets and winding stairways. An optional tour will also visit
the Byzantine hilltop town of Mystras with its captivating ruins. Cross the
Aegean to Turkey and the historic port of Bodrum. Here, explore the
Crusader Castle of St. Peter, which now houses the Museum of Underwater
Archaeology and the site of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, one of Seven Wonders
of the Ancient World.
Our stop in Kusadasi allows for a visit to the ancient city of Ephesus, Ionia’s finest site. From Cannakale, explore the ancient city of Troy, the legendary cultural center in the third and second millennia BC. Istanbul is a modern city with a very ancient past, with many great monuments from its days as the capital of three great empires: Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman.
