Western Mediterranean Odyssey
Valletta – Cadiz aboard Andrea
9 Days / 8 Nights • Nov. 7, 2009
We present to you the greatest joys of the Western Mediterranean – rocky, scenic islands, magnificent medieval and Renaissance cityscapes, inspiring Greco-Roman ruins, exotic Moorish medinas and souks, and the vibrant cities of southern Spain which blend the past and the future into an exciting continuity.
Optional excursions in each port of call allow you the freedom to see and experience just what you want. Beginning with a full day amid the grand battlements of Valletta, we visit some of the marvelous highlights of the region – the serene majesty of the Alhambra, the grandeur of the Moorish Alcazar, the beauty of Carthage's Roman ruins – and take in some of the Med's secret treasures, including the rarely visited islands of Sardinia and Minorca, the megalithic temples of Malta, and the outstanding collection of Roman mosaics at Tunis' famous Bardo Museum. This is the Mediterranean dream cruise you've been waiting for. Join us!

2009 Itinerary

Day 1: Valletta, Malta
Founded in 1565 by the Order of St. John, Valletta is a majestic Baroque UNESCO World Heritage Site overlooking the Mediterranean from within massive fortified walls. Embark on Andrea this afternoon. Remain in port overnight.

• Day 2: Valletta
An optional tour visits the St. John's Co-Cathedral, with its world-famous Caravaggio painting, and continues to Hagar Qim and Tarxien, two Neolithic temples more than 4,000 years old. Cruise this evening.

• Day 3: Tunis, Tunisia
In the exotic, French-influenced capital of Tunisia, languorous cafés and serene mosque courtyards mingle with bustling medina streets where you can buy everything from camel meat to stereos. Your optional city tour includes the famous Bardo Museum, which exhibits one of the world's greatest collections of Roman mosaics. Wander through the labyrinthine lanes of the medina and discover curios in the vibrant souks.
Alternatively, visit the ruins of ancient Carthage, with the remains of Roman baths and temples dedicated to Ba'al.

• Day 4: Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy
Founded by the Carthaginians, Cagliari boasts a charming medieval quarter with a 13th-century Cathedral and Roman ruins. On an optional excursion, travel to the nearby archaeological site of Nora, with its 3rd-century Roman ruins.

• Day 5: Mahon, Minorca, Balearic Islands, Spain
Also called Maó, this sun-drenched Spanish port town boasts perhaps the best natural harbor in the Mediterranean and is said to be the origin of a sauce made famous during a brief period of French rule: Mahónnaise. Join an optional excursion across the island to Ciutadella, Minorca’s former capital and still its Bishopric. On a stroll through the medieval quarter of this beautiful port city, admire the Town Hall – once a royal palace, the Cathedral of Minorca, the fish market and the charming arcaded shopping street “Ses Voltes.”
Enroute back to Mahón, visit “Sa Naveta des Tudons,” the largest of the megalithic vessel-shaped burial chambers unique to Minorca.

• Day 6: At Sea

• Day 7: Motril
From the Andalusian port of Motril, join an optional excursion to the incredible Alhambra in Granada, the spectacular fortress-palace of the Moorish kings

• Day 8: Cadiz
The oldest continually populated city in Western Europe, the port of Cadiz hosted Columbus – who departed from here on his second and fourth New World voyages – as well as the entire Spanish treasure fleet during the Age of Exploration.
Its wonderful zigzag alleyways and grand plazas are the gateway for our optional excursion to Seville, with its lavish, gold adorned Cathedral – the largest in the world – and the Moorish Alcazar.

Day 9: Cadiz
Disembark m/s Andrea after breakfast.
